Event Highlight | InnoPort X Chung Chi College | CUbicZine “Human Library” Talk Series — “A Goodbye While There’s Still Time” College Assembly (23 January 2026)

The CUbicZine “Human Library” Talk Series continued its meaningful journey at Chung Chi College Chapel on 23 January 2026, with a deeply reflective session titled “A Goodbye While There’s Still Time.” Building on earlier sessions at Shaw College and TWGHs Lee Ching Dea Memorial College, this third stop invited up to 1000 Chung Chi students to explore profound topics often left unspoken — ageing, death, and what it means to live well till the very end.
Led by Professor Helen Chan from the CUHK Centre for Bioethics and The Nethersole School of Nursing, Faculty of Medicine, and Mr. Kit Wong, Founder of Grand Ma Limited, the talk encouraged students to approach life and death not as taboos, but as essential conversations grounded in understanding, planning, and compassion.
Professor Chan opened the dialogue by clarifying the idea of Advance Medical Directive (AMD) — legal documents that allow individuals to express their medical preferences before losing decision-making capacity. As Hong Kong prepares to implement AMD legislation in May 2026, she reflected on her decade-long advocacy journey and the significance of empowering families to communicate openly about end-of-life choices. Professor Chan reminded students that the matter of life and death is not only for the elderly. She encouraged young people to see these topics as part of lifelong learning — to think about care, decision-making, and Advance Medical Directives as a way of understanding values and priorities early in life.
Mr. Wong, a former banker turned social innovator and lyricist, then shared how his company Grand Ma Limited fosters intergenerational inclusion by connecting youth and elders through creative projects. Drawing inspiration from his late grandmother, his work bridges generations, helping both young people and seniors rediscover dreams and purpose through cross-age collaboration. He also introduced one of his community innovation concepts — an app playfully named “止甲由” (Stop Cockroach Chaos), a neighbourhood mutual-aid platform designed to connect “cockroach-fearing” residents with local “heroes” willing to help eliminate the pests.
Despite coming from vastly different backgrounds — one grounded in clinical ethics and academic research, the other in creative social enterprise — the chemistry between Professor Chan and Mr. Wong filled the room with warmth and authenticity. Their dialogue demonstrated how empathy, curiosity, and action can intersect across disciplines to inspire new ways of thinking about life, community, and purpose.
InnoPort looks forward to upcoming CUbicZine Human Library series collaborations with other colleges.
