The 5th Hong Kong International Biotechnology Conference and Exhibition (BIOHK2026), was held from September 9 to 12, 2026, at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. Co-organized by the Hong Kong Biotechnology Organization and Reed Sinopharm Exhibitions under the theme ‘Kaleidoscope’, BIOHK2026 spotlighted Hong Kong’s vibrant life sciences ecosystem and its strategic positioning as a preeminent biotech crossroads connecting global industry leaders, clinical researchers, and investors. On 13 September 2026, Mr Kelvin Wong, Director of KTO at CUHK, travelled to the Zhangjiang Science Hall in Pudong, Shanghai, to attend the 2026 Annual Innovation Symposium of the Shanghai-Hong Kong Technology Transfer Network (SHK-TTN). Hosted by SHK-TTN, the symposium brought together leaders from relevant divisions of the Shanghai Science and Technology Commission, heads of research and technology transfer offices from universities across Shanghai and Hong Kong, and representatives of professional institutions such as the National Technology Transfer Eastern Centre. The atmosphere was vibrant and the discussions were substantive. The symposium featured pragmatic and in-depth discussions on several key topics in Shanghai-Hong Kong science and technology cooperation. Regarding the establishment of an interconnected system for science and technology scenario validation resources, participants agreed on the need to systematically map existing industrial validation scenarios in both cities, chart a cross-regional resource atlas, facilitate two-way sharing channels for prototype testing, outcome iteration and process validation, and refine supporting systems covering access standards, usage guidelines, and rights and responsibilities. On two-way commercialisation of research outcomes and the development of landing platforms in Shanghai, discussions focused on building precise two-way matching mechanisms for university outcomes, exploring full-cycle pathways for Hong Kong university outcomes to land in Shanghai and for Shanghai outcomes to go global, and making forward-looking plans for the spatial layout, functional positioning, and operating models of Hong Kong university innovation centres and joint R&D platforms in Shanghai. Shanghai and Hong Kong each possess distinct strengths in innovation resources, industrial application scenarios, and internationalisation, making them highly complementary. As the SHK-TTN continues to refine its working mechanisms for regular matchmaking, project follow-up, and dynamic resource updates, the integrated Shanghai-Hong Kong technology transfer empowerment platform will undoubtedly play an increasingly important role in injecting sustained momentum into cross-border commercialisation of university research outcomes. Meanwhile, Mr Wong served as a judge at the Final of the 2026 InnoMatch Technology Transfer Professionals Competition. Six finalist teams competed in a format of an 8-minute pitch followed by a 6-minute Q&A session. The evaluation centred on the core professional competencies of technology transfer professionals, with emphasis on the precision of needs identification and the ability to recognise implicit needs and application scenarios; the relevance and feasibility of solution design and implementation strategies; the accuracy of partner profiling; the soundness of pricing logic and supporting rationale for proposed transactions; and the professional depth demonstrated in presentation and responses during the Q&A. Technology transfer professionals are the critical bridge that carries research outcomes from the laboratory to the market, and their expertise largely determines the success of commercialisation. In this competition, a group of outstanding professionals emerged who combine strong technology assessment capabilities, commercial negotiation skills, and cross-domain integration thinking. Their impressive performance gave great confidence in the future of the profession. While the pitches have come to an end, the journey of commercialisation never stops; we look forward to seeing these talented professionals facilitate more high-quality commercialisation cases on the Shanghai-Hong Kong stage and beyond. Co-organised by the Government of the HKSAR and the HKTDC under the theme “Advancing High-Quality Development • Embarking on a New Journey”, the flagship summit convened over 6,200 political and business leaders from across 70 countries and regions. Acting as an active collaboration partner in the innovation landscape, CUHK KTO leveraged this international platform to exchange insights on multilateral collaboration, bridge academic excellence with global industry demand, and explore concrete business matching and commercialisation opportunities aligned with the Belt and Road Initiative. At the Summit’s dedicated Open Stage session, Mr. Kelvin Wong, Director of KTO, introduced CUHK’s vibrant innovation and entrepreneurship ecosystem to a diverse international audience. Mr. Wong highlighted KTO’s dedicated efforts in transforming cutting-edge campus research into impactful, market-ready ventures, expressing the vision to open up doors to new global opportunities and strategic partnerships in Belt and Road markets. Following his address, Mr. Wong was interviewed by the media, further articulating CUHK’s role as a vital superconnector between groundbreaking university research, global investors, and regional industry stakeholders. A major milestone of this year’s Summit was the debut of the University Zone, designed to showcase Hong Kong’s strengths in research, technological translation, and international talent development. CUHK KTO proudly led three high-potential CUHK teams—BactOPack Limited, Luquos Energy Limited, and ReHarmony Limited to showcase breakthroughs spanning green technology, smart city development, bio-based materials, safe flow battery energy storage, and radiative cooling coatings at the exhibition floor. Throughout the two-day event, the CUHK booths attracted a steady stream of global delegates, venture capitalists, industry partners, and potential collaborators eager to explore cross-regional applications and strategic tie-ups. Group Photo: – Opening Ceremony of HKLF Science Seminar “Science in the Age of AI” (Source: HKLF) The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), in collaboration with the Council of the Hong Kong Laureate Forum (HKLF), successfully held the two-day science seminar titled “Science in the Age of AI” on the CUHK campus on 9–10 September 2026. Serving as an official prelude to the Hong Kong Laureate Forum 2027, the high-level symposium gathered internationally renowned scholars, industry leaders, emerging researchers, and students to examine how artificial intelligence drives breakthrough scientific discoveries and accelerates real-world application across key disciplines. The opening ceremony was officially officiated by Professor Timothy Tong Wai-cheung, Chairman of the Council of the Hong Kong Laureate Forum; Mr Ivan Lee Kwok-bun, Commissioner for Innovation and Technology of the HKSAR Government; and Professor Dennis Lo Yuk-ming, Vice-Chancellor and President of CUHK. Professor Lo remarked in his opening speech, “AI has become a powerful accelerator for the 21st century. However, as we embrace this transformative power, we must reflect on what it means to be a scientist today. AI can analyse data and identify correlations, but it cannot experience wonder and replace human intuition, scientific curiosity or ethical judgment. The machine can generate answers, but it takes a right human mind to ask good questions. That is why universities such as CUHK is playing a very critical role. Our mission is not simply to teach students how to run algorithms, but to cultivate critical thinkers who know how to interrogate them. At CUHK, we are actively driving interdisciplinary collaboration, using AI as a bridge connecting computer science, medicine, environmental studies, and the humanities.
