Event Highlight | Lab & Lounge @CUHK – Science to Startup: The SinoMab Journey (06 February 2026)
On 6 February 2026, CUHK InnoPort launched its inaugural networking series, “Lab & Lounge @CUHK,” at UGA, InnoPort. Themed “Science to Startup: The SinoMab Journey,” the evening featured Dr. Shui On Leung, Founder and CEO of SinoMab BioScience Limited. Moderated by Prof. Walter Ho, the session offered an in-depth look at the realities of biotech entrepreneurship. The event brought together professors, researchers, students, and aspiring entrepreneurs in a vibrant gathering that bridged academic research and real-world innovation.
Networking kicked off right from early registration, with participants mingling over refreshments in a relaxed lounge atmosphere. Soft lighting, comfortable seating, and light snacks and beverages created an inviting, informal environment that immediately put everyone at ease. Unlike traditional lecture halls or conference rooms, this lounge-style setup fostered natural conversations before the formal session began.
SinoMab BioScience Limited is a pioneering Hong Kong biotech company established in 2001 and listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange (stock code: 3681.HK). Dr. Leung shared SinoMab’s remarkable evolution “from molecules to medicine,” covering key drug development milestones, regulatory hurdles, resource limitations, and the strategic decisions that have helped shape Hong Kong’s growing biotech ecosystem. Participants gained practical insights into the pharmaceutical industry and the business challenges of turning scientific discoveries into viable startups.
What truly set the event apart was how the relaxing lounge atmosphere fueled meaningful collaborations and deepened engagement. The informal setting encouraged open, candid dialogue—far beyond what a conventional seminar format might allow. Participants chatted freely across disciplines, exchanging ideas and forming initial connections in a low-pressure setting that felt more like a casual gathering than a formal event.
As CUHK InnoPort’s first-ever networking series, Lab & Lounge @CUHK aims to transform laboratory knowledge into dynamic, cross-disciplinary conversations. We hope to blend intellectual inspiration with genuine relationship-building in a relaxed lounge setting.

Organized by the Hong Kong New Generation Cultural Association (HKNGCA), The Hong Kong University Student Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition, which originated in 2015, is currently the largest and most representative competition for university students in Hong Kong. The competition encompasses both “innovation” and “entrepreneurship” and serves as a link to two of the most authoritative and renowned national competitions, the “Challenge Cup” and “China International College Students’ Innovation Competition”.
Award-winning projects have the opportunity to be selected as part of the “HKSAR representative team” to participate in three international competitions and invention exhibitions, including: Worldinvent™ Singapore (WoSG), Indonesia Inventors Day (IID) & Seoul International Invention Fair (SIIF) and gain access to resource connections, public exhibitions, media coverage and other development opportunities.
CUHK achieved remarkable success, securing 22 awards at the 11th Hong Kong University Student Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition and 17 awards at the National and International University Student Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competitions in 2025. Highlights included a gold-winning project earned third place nationally at the China International College Students’ Innovation Competition 2025 and one special prize at the 19th “Challenge Cup” National College Students Extracurricular Academic Science and Technology Works Competition.

Continue readingEvent Highlight | InnoPort X Lee Woo Sing College | CubicZine “Human Library” Talk Series — “Is Social Enterprise Making Money?” College Assembly (30 January 2026)
As part of CUHK InnoPort’s signature series, which connects students with entrepreneurs and thought leaders through story-driven dialogues, the CUbicZine “Human Library” continued its journey at Lee Woo Sing College on 30 January 2026. The latest session, themed “Is Social Enterprise Making Money?”, drew the enthusiastic participation of nearly 400 students, who explored how entrepreneurship can balance financial sustainability with social mission.
The event featured two distinguished guest speakers — Mr. Raymond Chau, a CUHK alumnus in Business Administration and Information Engineering, as well as the Founder of Senior Deli; and Mr. Jason Or, Founder of SmartAge Intelligence Limited — who shared their experiences establishing ageing-related social enterprises in Hong Kong. Drawing on their distinct professional paths, both speakers offered valuable insights into building ventures that create measurable social impact through business innovation.
Raymond recounted his transition from a background in business administration and information engineering to founding Senior Deli, an enterprise addressing elders’ nutritional and emotional needs through specially designed soft meals for those experiencing swallowing difficulties. He highlighted how product design, empathy, and market understanding can together drive meaningful change.
Jason, a CUHK EMBA alumnus and former engineer at Microsoft’s U.S. headquarters, shared how his personal experience inspired him to launch SmartAge, a remote care system that leverages AI technology to enhance the safety and independence of seniors. Reflecting on early development challenges, he emphasized the importance of building trust with users, integrating research with practice, and maintaining human-centered innovation.
The discussion then turned to the central question — whether social enterprises can “make money.” Both speakers noted that profitability and social responsibility are not mutually exclusive. Instead, they underscored how effective management, partnerships, and a clear mission enable social enterprises to achieve both financial viability and lasting community value.
In closing, Raymond and Jason encouraged students to approach entrepreneurship with courage, realism, and empathy. They shared that while the path can be demanding, aligning personal drive with social good brings both fulfillment and impact.
InnoPort looks forward to continuing the CUbicZine “Human Library” talk series across CUHK’s colleges, fostering meaningful dialogues that nurture a new generation of entrepreneurs and innovators.

Continue readingEvent Highlight | InnoPort X Chung Chi College | CUbicZine “Human Library” Talk Series — “A Goodbye While There’s Still Time” College Assembly (23 January 2026)
The CUbicZine “Human Library” Talk Series continued its meaningful journey at Chung Chi College Chapel on 23 January 2026, with a deeply reflective session titled “A Goodbye While There’s Still Time.” Building on earlier sessions at Shaw College and TWGHs Lee Ching Dea Memorial College, this third stop invited up to 1000 Chung Chi students to explore profound topics often left unspoken — ageing, death, and what it means to live well till the very end. Led by Professor Helen Chan from the CUHK Centre for Bioethics and The Nethersole School of Nursing, Faculty of Medicine, and Mr. Kit Wong, Founder of Grand Ma Limited, the talk encouraged students to approach life and death not as taboos, but as essential conversations grounded in understanding, planning, and compassion. Professor Chan opened the dialogue by clarifying the idea of Advance Medical Directive (AMD) — legal documents that allow individuals to express their medical preferences before losing decision-making capacity. As Hong Kong prepares to implement AMD legislation in May 2026, she reflected on her decade-long advocacy journey and the significance of empowering families to communicate openly about end-of-life choices. Professor Chan reminded students that the matter of life and death is not only for the elderly. She encouraged young people to see these topics as part of lifelong learning — to think about care, decision-making, and Advance Medical Directives as a way of understanding values and priorities early in life. Mr. Wong, a former banker turned social innovator and lyricist, then shared how his company Grand Ma Limited fosters intergenerational inclusion by connecting youth and elders through creative projects. Drawing inspiration from his late grandmother, his work bridges generations, helping both young people and seniors rediscover dreams and purpose through cross-age collaboration. He also introduced one of his community innovation concepts — an app playfully named “止甲由” (Stop Cockroach Chaos), a neighbourhood mutual-aid platform designed to connect “cockroach-fearing” residents with local “heroes” willing to help eliminate the pests. Despite coming from vastly different backgrounds — one grounded in clinical ethics and academic research, the other in creative social enterprise — the chemistry between Professor Chan and Mr. Wong filled the room with warmth and authenticity. Their dialogue demonstrated how empathy, curiosity, and action can intersect across disciplines to inspire new ways of thinking about life, community, and purpose. InnoPort looks forward to upcoming CUbicZine Human Library series collaborations with other colleges.
