Mui Tsz Lam Revitalisation Project wins Research Project of the Year: Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences at the THE Awards Asia 2025

【CUHKAwards】Mui Tsz Lam Revitalisation Project wins Research Project of the Year: Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences at the THE Awards Asia 2025

Congratulations to Professor Thomas Chung of the CUHK School of Architecture and his team! Their “Mui Tsz Lam Revitalisation Project” has been awarded the 2025 Times Higher Education (THE) Awards Asia “Research Project of the Year: Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences”.

This project, supported by the Countryside Conservation Office’s Countryside Conservation Funding Scheme, is centred on collaborative restoration and brings together villagers, students, and volunteers to revitalise the 360-year-old Hakka village of Mui Tsz Lam. It sets a new benchmark for sustainable placemaking and rural conservation in Hong Kong.

Professor Chung has consistently emphasised in past interviews that architecture is not just about renovation, but about connecting people with place, culture, and the environment. He has led students and volunteers into the countryside, using a co-creative approach to restore the “Old House” and “Mural House”, and transformed the Old House into “Mui Tsz Lam Commons”, a community cooperative that now serves as an education and research base for CUHK. Over the past four years, more than 250 villagers, volunteers, students, and NGO members have participated, breathing new life into the village.

Professor Thomas Chung shared: “This land gives me a sense of authenticity, which motivates me to conduct research and experiments. I hope that through this project, more people will become aware of local culture and participate in rural conservation, so that together we can preserve Hong Kong’s precious rural memories.”
